Simien Mountains trekking guide 2026: the Roof of Africa

The Simien Mountains deliver one of the most spectacular trekking experiences in Africa. Established as a national park in 1969 and inscribed by UNESCO in 1978, they are famous for razor-sharp escarpments, plunging gorges and vast highland plateaus, and for wildlife found nowhere else, including the gelada, walia ibex and Ethiopian wolf.

The trekking season runs from September to June. The dry months from October to March bring clear skies and excellent visibility; daytime temperatures are typically 11 to 18 °C, while nights can be cold. December to February is peak season. September offers lush green landscapes just after the rains, while July and August bring slippery trails and mist and are best avoided by first-time visitors.

All treks require a licensed guide and an armed scout. The classic three- to four-day trek starts at Sankaber and passes through Gich and Chenek, with Jinbar waterfall, the Imet Gogo viewpoint and frequent gelada sightings. Five- to seven-day treks add the summit of Ras Dashen, Ethiopia’s highest peak, and remoter areas with better chances of walia ibex and Ethiopian wolf. Day hikes from lodges suit those who prefer not to camp.

Expect four to eight hours of walking a day at altitudes between 3,000 and 4,500 metres, with steep sections and variable weather. Acclimatisation is important; previous hiking experience helps, but fit beginners can manage the shorter routes with sensible pacing.

Most trekkers fly from Addis Ababa to Gondar and drive two to three hours to Debark, the park headquarters. Pack warm layers, a waterproof jacket, gloves and hat, sturdy boots, trekking poles, a sleeping bag if camping, a headlamp, a water bottle, snacks, sunscreen, binoculars and personal medication.

Stay on designated trails, respect local communities, support conservation and leave no trace. Trek with accredited local guides and scouts, and you will discover one of the most beautiful mountain landscapes on earth.
