Day by Day
Detailed Day-by-Day Itinerary
This itinerary is carefully planned, but minor adjustments may be made due to weather, local festivals, road conditions or your personal interests to ensure the best possible experience.
Day 1
Fly Addis Ababa – Arba Minch – Konso
After breakfast, transfer to Bole International Airport for your flight to Arba Minch. Meet your private guide and driver and drive through beautiful landscapes and rural communities to the Konso Cultural Landscape, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its terraced agriculture, stone settlements and unique traditions. In the afternoon, visit a traditional Konso community to learn about their way of life, houses, farming and cultural heritage. Overnight: Kanta Lodge, Konso.
Day 2
Konso – Weyto – Arbore – Turmi – Hamer Village
After breakfast, travel south via Weyto toward the Omo Valley and visit the Arbore people, a distinctive community of the Lower Omo Valley, to learn about their lifestyle, clothing and customs. Continue to Turmi, one of the main centres for exploring the Hamer communities. Later in the afternoon, visit a Hamer village, known for its distinctive hairstyles, colourful beadwork, traditional clothing and cattle-based culture. If a bull-jumping ceremony is taking place, we will make every effort to arrange the timing so that you can attend. Overnight: Paradise Lodge, Turmi.
Day 3
Turmi – Karo – Omorate – Dassanech – Turmi
After breakfast, drive toward the Omo River to visit the Karo people, renowned for their body and face painting made with natural pigments, and explore their village. After lunch, continue to Omorate and cross the Omo River by traditional boat to visit a Dassanech community of the delta, experiencing their traditions, clothing, body decoration and way of life in this remote part of southern Ethiopia. Return to Turmi in the evening. Overnight: Paradise Lodge, Turmi.
Day 4
Turmi – Key Afer Thursday Market – Jinka
After breakfast, leave Turmi and drive to Key Afer, arriving in time for its weekly Thursday market; the itinerary is arranged around this market day. Key Afer is one of the most colourful markets in the southern Omo Valley, where the Bena, Hamer and other communities gather. See traditional clothing, jewellery and beadwork, produce and livestock, and enjoy excellent photography in a lively atmosphere. Continue to Jinka, the main town and gateway to the southern Omo Valley. Overnight: Eco Omo Lodge, Jinka.
Day 5
Jinka – Mago National Park – Mursi – Jinka
After breakfast, drive into Mago National Park to visit a Mursi community. The Mursi are one of the best-known peoples of the Lower Omo Valley, famous for their distinctive traditions, body decoration and the lip-plate tradition among some women. Spend time with your local guide learning about their lifestyle, cattle herding, agriculture and environment, then return to Jinka for a free afternoon. Overnight: Eco Omo Lodge, Jinka.
Day 6
Jinka – Dimeka Market – Bena Stilt Walkers – Jinka
After breakfast, set off early on the drive of about 120 km to Dimeka. Today is dedicated to one of the most memorable highlights of the Omo Valley: the Dimeka market, where surrounding communities trade produce, livestock, clothing and jewellery, and the Bena boys walking on their traditional stilts. Our local team will coordinate the visit to give you the best possible opportunity to experience both, before driving back to Jinka. Overnight: Eco Omo Lodge, Jinka.
Day 7
Ari Village – Fly Jinka – Addis Ababa
After breakfast, visit an Ari village to experience the traditional homes, farming and everyday customs of the Ari people, with your local guide explaining their traditions and relationship with the land. After lunch, transfer to the airport for your afternoon flight to Addis Ababa, where you will be met and transferred to your hotel to relax. Overnight: Addis Ababa.
Day 8
Fly Addis Ababa – Lalibela – First Group of Churches
After breakfast, fly from Addis Ababa to Lalibela and transfer to your hotel. After lunch, begin exploring the first group of Lalibela’s rock-hewn churches, carved directly into volcanic rock more than 800 years ago, with their remarkable architecture, underground passageways and courtyards. Your guide will explain the history of Lalibela and its role as one of Ethiopia’s most important pilgrimage destinations. Overnight: Sora Lodge, Lalibela.
Day 9
Yemrehanna Kristos or Asheton Maryam – Second Group of Churches
After breakfast, if it is safe to do so, visit Yemrehanna Kristos, an impressive medieval church outside Lalibela built in a distinctive style within a dramatic natural setting; otherwise, visit Asheton Maryam, a historic monastery in the mountains above Lalibela with beautiful views. Return to Lalibela for lunch and, in the afternoon, explore the remaining group of rock-hewn churches, including some of the town’s most famous monuments. Overnight: Sora Lodge, Lalibela.
Day 10
Lalibela – Coffee Ceremony – Genna (Christmas Eve)
After breakfast, return to the churches to experience the spiritual atmosphere of Lalibela without rushing, observing pilgrims and worshippers among the ancient architecture. During the day, enjoy a traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony, an important part of Ethiopian hospitality. In the evening, attend the Ethiopian Christmas Eve (Genna) celebration, when thousands of pilgrims dressed in white gather around the churches for prayers and chanting that continue through the night. After experiencing part of this remarkable tradition, return to your hotel around midnight. Overnight: Sora Lodge, Lalibela.
Day 11
Genna Morning Celebration – Fly Lalibela – Addis Ababa – Semera
Wake up very early to witness the main Genna celebration, with pilgrims, priests and worshippers gathered around the ancient churches for prayers, chanting and processions, including the celebration of “Beza Kulu Alem Yom Tewelde Menas”, honouring the birth of Christ, the Redeemer of the World. Return to the hotel for breakfast, then fly from Lalibela to Addis Ababa and connect to Semera, the gateway to the Danakil Depression. If security, road conditions and local advice are favourable, you may instead drive overland from Lalibela to Semera, watching the highlands give way to the lowlands of Afar; otherwise the flight via Addis Ababa is used. Overnight: Ruftana Hotel, Semera.
Day 12
Semera – Erta Ale
After breakfast, meet the Danakil team. You will be warmly welcomed by our experienced team, including skilled 4WD drivers, a professional cook, local guides, and an official tour leader from the Tourism Authority. A police escort will accompany the expedition, and all camping equipment will be prepared before departure. Begin the scenic drive across the dramatic Afar Desert toward Erta Ale Volcano. Upon arrival, continue to the camping area located on the rim of the caldera. In the late afternoon, at around 5:30 PM, start the approximately one-hour hike to the summit. Although the famous lava lake is currently inactive, Erta Ale remains one of the world’s most fascinating shield volcanoes. From the summit, enjoy breathtaking views of the volcanic crater, rugged lava fields, and the unique geological landscape created by centuries of volcanic activity. After spending time exploring and taking photographs, return to the campsite at around 8:00 PM. Spend the night camping under the stars in a peaceful open-air setting, with comfortable mattresses, pillows, clean bed linens, and all essential camping facilities provided. Overnight: Dodom, Camping.
Day 13
Erta Ale – Lake Afdera – Hamed Ela
Wake up early, around 5:00 AM, to witness a spectacular sunrise over the volcanic landscape before returning to the campsite for breakfast. After breakfast, drive to Lake Afdera, a beautiful saltwater lake in the heart of the Danakil Depression. Surrounded by dramatic desert scenery, the lake offers a refreshing opportunity to swim in its warm, mineral-rich waters. Continue to Hamed Ela, the gateway to Dallol, where you will set up camp for the night. In the late afternoon, visit Lake Assale (Karum Lake) to admire the breathtaking sunset over the vast salt flats, one of the most unforgettable views in the Danakil Depression. Overnight in an open-air campsite with comfortable mattresses, pillows, clean bed linens, and ample drinking water. Overnight: Hamed Ela, Camping.
Day 14
Dallol – Semera – Fly to Addis Ababa
Wake up early and drive to Lake Assale (Lake Karum) to witness a breathtaking sunrise over the vast salt flats of the Danakil Depression. After sunrise, continue to Dallol, one of the most extraordinary geothermal landscapes on Earth. Explore its colourful hydrothermal fields, bubbling hot springs, mineral terraces, and vibrant sulphur deposits, whose shades of yellow, green, orange, and white create a surreal landscape unlike anywhere else in the world. Next, drive to the salt and mud formations beneath the Dallol crater and enjoy a picnic breakfast surrounded by this spectacular scenery. Continue across the endless salt plains of Lake Karum, where you can relax in a natural saltwater pool before visiting the local Afar salt miners. Learn about their centuries-old tradition of cutting salt blocks by hand and carrying them by camel caravan across the desert, a practice that has remained largely unchanged for generations. In the afternoon, depart Hamed Ela and drive to Semera Airport for your late afternoon flight to Addis Ababa, bringing your Danakil adventure to an end. Overnight: Best Western Plus Hotel, Addis Ababa. What to bring for the Danakil Depression: a torch or head lamp for walking at night, a small backpack for the hike up the volcano, closed and comfortable hiking shoes, sun protection such as sunscreen and a hat, a jacket for the night on the volcano, tissues, and a sleeping bag, pillow or blanket (these can also be provided).

What our guests say
Rated 5.0 on Tripadvisor and Google, and 4.9 on SafariBookings.
“My tour operator was very communicative even before the trip began and very responsive on WhatsApp. He booked all my domestic flights and arranged all my airport pick-ups and drop-offs. He had professional guides in all the regions I visited, the itinerary was clear, and he was flexible with any changes. There were no extra costs. He is reliable, communicative and well experienced. I will be back with the same company.”

They were patient, professional, knowledgeable and took great care of us. Everything was seamlessly coordinated and they were always on time for pickups and made sure we were briefed in advance of the itinerary and any changes. One of my top travel destinations in Africa, with some of the kindest and warmest people. Maereg went above and beyond! First-class service, always with a smile!”
