Why We Go
The green Gedeo highlands behind one of the world’s most celebrated coffees.
For generations, coffee has shaped the identity, economy and landscape of Yirgacheffe. Its name is recognised by coffee lovers worldwide for coffees often associated with floral aromas, citrus notes, delicate flavours and bright acidity, varying with the coffee variety, growing conditions and processing.
Coffee is traditionally grown in small plots beneath shade trees and alongside enset, fruit trees and other crops, creating layered landscapes that support local livelihoods. During the harvest, ripe cherries are collected and taken to washing stations and cooperatives: washed coffee is generally associated with clean, bright flavours, while naturally processed coffee often develops pronounced fruity notes.
Yirgacheffe lies within the Gedeo cultural landscape, recognised by UNESCO for its traditional agroforestry: densely cultivated hillsides, indigenous trees, coffee gardens and enset plantations. The wider region is also known for its traditional settlements and historic stone monuments, including the stelae and archaeological sites around Dilla.
Coffee’s significance extends far beyond agriculture. In the traditional coffee ceremony, green beans are roasted, ground and brewed in a clay pot called a jebena and served in small cups with conversation and snacks, an expression of hospitality that brings families, neighbours and visitors together.
Walking through the green hills, shaded coffee gardens and rural settlements shows how coffee, enset and indigenous trees are woven into everyday farming, from the bustle of the harvest to the lush months after the rains. Yirgacheffe is one of the best places in Ethiopia to understand how a single crop can shape local identity, livelihoods and global connections.
