Why We Go
Site of Africa’s first Muslim settlement and a symbol of religious coexistence.
Negash lies about 60 kilometres north of Mekelle. Tradition holds that early Muslims, including members of the Prophet Muhammad’s family, fled persecution in Mecca and were welcomed here by the Aksumite king, known in Arabic as al-Najashi. It is regarded as the site of the first mosque in Africa.
For Ethiopians of both faiths, Negash remains a powerful reminder of the country’s long tradition of peaceful coexistence between Christian and Muslim communities.
Highlights
- The Al-Nejashi Mosque, rebuilt on a historic site
- Tombs of the early Muslim refugees
- The story of the first Hijra to Abyssinia
- An easy stop on the road between Mekelle and Wukro
