Why We Go
A 4,284-metre massif above Lalibela with Ethiopian wolves and gelada.
Rising to 4,284 metres in North Wollo, Abune Yosef is among the highest mountains in Ethiopia. Its habitats range from montane dry forest and juniper woodland to Afro-alpine grassland above 3,500 metres, home to at least 43 mammal species, including the Ethiopian wolf, gelada, klipspringer and leopard, and more than 220 species of birds.
On the northwestern slopes, farming communities grow barley, potatoes and lentils at more than 3,300 metres. Community-run guesthouses make it possible to trek here from Lalibela, combining extraordinary scenery with genuine highland hospitality.
Highlights
- A chance of seeing the endangered Ethiopian wolf
- Large troops of gelada on the grasslands
- Community guesthouses on the trek from Lalibela
