Day by Day

Detailed Day-by-Day Itinerary

This itinerary is carefully planned, but minor adjustments may be made due to weather, local festivals, road conditions or your personal interests to ensure the best possible experience.

  1. Day 1

    Addis Ababa City Tour

After breakfast, enjoy a full-day guided tour of Addis Ababa. Begin with a scenic drive to Mount Entoto, the highest point overlooking the city, where you will enjoy panoramic views and learn about Emperor Menelik II’s historic capital. Continue to the National Museum of Ethiopia, home to the world-famous 3.2-million-year-old fossil “Lucy” as well as remarkable archaeological treasures and royal artefacts. Visit Holy Trinity Cathedral, one of Ethiopia’s most important religious sites and the burial place of Emperor Haile Selassie, and the Ethnological Museum, inside the former palace of Emperor Haile Selassie, whose exhibits showcase Ethiopia’s diverse cultures, traditions and history. Finish the day at Merkato, the largest open-air market in East Africa. Overnight: Sabon Hotel, Addis Ababa.

  2. Day 2

Fly Addis Ababa – Semera – Drive to Erta Ale

Take a morning flight from Addis Ababa to Semera, the capital of Ethiopia’s Afar Region. You will be warmly welcomed by our experienced team, including skilled 4WD drivers, a professional cook, local guides, and an official tour leader from the Tourism Authority. A police escort will accompany the expedition, and all camping equipment will be prepared before departure. After breakfast, begin the scenic drive across the dramatic Afar Desert toward Erta Ale Volcano. Upon arrival, continue to the camping area located on the rim of the caldera. In the late afternoon, at around 5:30 PM, start the approximately one-hour hike to the summit. Although the famous lava lake is currently inactive, Erta Ale remains one of the world’s most fascinating shield volcanoes. From the summit, enjoy breathtaking views of the volcanic crater, rugged lava fields, and the unique geological landscape created by centuries of volcanic activity. After spending time exploring and taking photographs, return to the campsite at around 8:00 PM. Spend the night camping under the stars in a peaceful open-air setting, with comfortable mattresses, pillows, clean bed linens, and all essential camping facilities provided. Overnight: Dodom, Camping.

  3. Day 3

Erta Ale – Dallol – Lake Assale

Wake early to enjoy sunrise over the volcanic landscape before descending from Erta Ale. Drive north across the Danakil Depression to the extraordinary hydrothermal fields of Dallol, one of the most colourful geological sites on Earth, and explore its vibrant mineral terraces, bubbling hot springs, sulphur deposits and salt formations created by intense geothermal activity. Continue to Lake Assale (Karum), where Afar people have harvested salt by hand for centuries. Observe traditional salt mining and watch camel caravans carry massive salt blocks across the desert, following trade routes that have existed for generations. Overnight: Hamed Ela, Camping.

  4. Day 4

    Danakil Depression – Mekelle

After breakfast, leave the Danakil Depression and begin the journey from Dallol to Mekelle. Travel through changing landscapes as the harsh Danakil Desert gradually gives way to the mountains and highlands of Tigray. Arrive in Mekelle, the capital of the Tigray Region, check in to your hotel and spend the evening relaxing before the journey into the Gheralta Mountains. Overnight: Libanos International Hotel, Mekelle.

  5. Day 5

Mekelle – Wukro Cherkos – Abreha we Atsbeha – Hawzen

After breakfast, drive from Mekelle toward Hawzen, visiting the remarkable rock-hewn churches of Wukro Cherkos and Abune Abreha we Atsbeha along the way. Wukro Cherkos is known for its distinctive architecture and ancient religious heritage, while Abreha we Atsbeha is famous for its beautifully carved interior and historic religious paintings. Continue to Hawzen, the gateway to the Gheralta Mountains and its extraordinary collection of rock-hewn churches, and spend the evening preparing for the following day’s mountain adventure. Overnight: Vision Hotel, Hawzen.

  6. Day 6

Abuna Yemata Guh – Maryam Korkor – Abba Daniel

After breakfast, drive to the base of the Gheralta Mountains. Your adventure begins with the exhilarating climb to Abuna Yemata Guh, undoubtedly Ethiopia’s most spectacular rock-hewn church. Perched high on a sandstone pinnacle, it is reached by scrambling over rock faces and crossing narrow cliff ledges, and the reward is breathtaking views and beautifully preserved 15th-century frescoes. After descending, continue on foot to Debre Maryam Korkor, one of the largest and finest churches in the region, carved into the mountainside with impressive ancient paintings. Nearby, visit the peaceful prayer cave of Abba Daniel, a sacred hermitage hidden among the cliffs, before returning to Hawzen in the late afternoon. Overnight: Vision Hotel, Hawzen.

  7. Day 7

Debre Tsion Mariam – Medhane Alem Adi Kesho – Mekelle

Following breakfast, continue exploring the rock-hewn churches of Tigray. Visit Debre Tsion Mariam, one of the region’s finest monolithic churches, renowned for its magnificent ceiling decorations, colourful murals and peaceful mountain setting. Continue to Medhane Alem Adi Kesho (Maikudi), a hidden treasure carved into towering sandstone cliffs and reached by a scenic hike through narrow rock passages; it is famous for its religious paintings, ancient manuscripts and tranquil atmosphere. Afterwards, drive to Mekelle. Overnight: Libanos International Hotel, Mekelle.

  8. Day 8

Fly Mekelle – Addis Ababa – Departure

After breakfast, transfer to Mekelle Airport for your morning flight back to Addis Ababa. Enjoy free time for last-minute shopping, local craft shops or a traditional Ethiopian coffee house. “Excellent services provided by Maereg and his team. The local guides and the drivers – Geta (my fave) – were all great. They were patient, professional, knowledgeable and took great care of us. Everything was seamlessly coordinated and they were always on time for pickups and made sure we were briefed in advance of the itinerary and any changes. One of my top travel destinations in Africa, with some of the kindest and warmest people. Maereg went above and beyond! First-class service, always with a smile!”
