Detailed Day-by-Day Itinerary
This itinerary is carefully planned, but minor adjustments may be made due to weather, local festivals, road conditions or your personal interests to ensure the best possible experience.
Day 1
Fly Addis Ababa – Dire Dawa – Harar – The Historic Walled City
Take a morning flight from Addis Ababa to Dire Dawa. Upon arrival at Dire Dawa Airport, meet your driver and guide and transfer to Harar, approximately 55 km away. After checking into your hotel, begin exploring Harar Jugol, the historic walled city recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Walk through its traditional gates and narrow alleyways, discovering the distinctive architecture, historic buildings, mosques and shrines that reflect centuries of cultural and religious history. Visit a traditional Harari house to learn about family life, interior decoration and the colourful woven baskets displayed on the walls, then continue to the local markets to browse spices, coffee, textiles and handmade crafts. In the evening, experience Harar’s famous hyena-feeding tradition with a local handler, one of the city’s best-known cultural attractions. Overnight: Harar.
Day 2
Harar’s Landmarks, Museums & Coffee Traditions
After breakfast, visit the Arthur Rimbaud House Museum, a historic building associated with the French poet who lived in Harar in the late nineteenth century, and discover the city’s connections with international traders, travellers and writers. Continue to the Sherif Harari City Museum, subject to opening hours, to learn about Harari history, traditional clothing, household objects and manuscripts. Walk along sections of the historic city walls, explore more traditional neighbourhoods and visit selected mosques and religious sites, respecting local customs and any restrictions on entry. Later, visit artisan workshops and markets to learn about basket weaving, handicrafts and the trade in Harar coffee, and enjoy a traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony. Your guide will explain local customs, traditional dress and the regional khat trade as you observe everyday life in the market areas. Overnight: Harar.
Day 3
Harar – Local Markets – Dire Dawa – Fly to Addis Ababa
After breakfast, enjoy a final morning in Harar at a relaxed pace. Visit a local market to observe the daily activities of traders and residents, with time to buy handicrafts, woven baskets, textiles, spices and locally produced coffee, and take a last walk through the historic streets of Harar Jugol. After lunch, drive to Dire Dawa Airport, approximately 55 km away, for your flight back to Addis Ababa.

What our guests say
Rated 5.0 on Tripadvisor and Google, and 4.9 on SafariBookings.
“My tour operator was very communicative even before the trip began and very responsive on WhatsApp. He booked all my domestic flights and arranged all my airport pick-ups and drop-offs. He had professional guides in all the regions I visited, the itinerary was clear, and he was flexible with any changes. There were no extra costs. He is reliable, communicative and well experienced. I will be back with the same company.”

They were patient, professional, knowledgeable and took great care of us. Everything was seamlessly coordinated and they were always on time for pickups and made sure we were briefed in advance of the itinerary and any changes. One of my top travel destinations in Africa, with some of the kindest and warmest people. Maereg went above and beyond! First-class service, always with a smile!”
