Day by Day
Detailed Day-by-Day Itinerary
This itinerary is carefully planned, but minor adjustments may be made due to weather, local festivals, road conditions or your personal interests to ensure the best possible experience.
Day 1
Fly Addis Ababa – Axum – Stelae, Museum & Dungur Palace
Take a morning flight from Addis Ababa to Axum. Upon arrival at Axum Airport, meet your guide and driver and transfer to your hotel. Begin at the Northern Stelae Field, where enormous carved granite monuments commemorate the achievements of the Aksumite civilisation, including the famous obelisk returned to Ethiopia from Italy. Continue to the Archaeological Museum of Axum, whose coins, inscriptions, pottery and other artefacts illustrate the kingdom’s economic, cultural and political importance, and see the Ezana Stone, a trilingual inscription in Ge’ez, Greek and Sabaean that records King Ezana’s reign and the spread of Christianity in the kingdom. Later, explore the ruins of Dungur Palace, traditionally associated with the Queen of Sheba, and the nearby Queen of Sheba’s Bath, a large ancient reservoir. Depending on time and opening hours, continue to the royal tombs and other archaeological sites around Axum. Overnight: Axum.
Day 2
Axum – Yeha Temple – Axum
After breakfast, drive approximately 50 to 60 km through the landscapes and traditional settlements of the Tigray highlands to Yeha. Visit the Yeha Temple, a pre-Aksumite monument believed to date to around the seventh century BCE, built from carefully fitted stone blocks that show the sophisticated architecture of the communities living here before the rise of Axum. Your guide will explain Yeha’s role as an early religious and cultural centre, its South Arabian influences and its relationship with the later Aksumite Kingdom. Subject to access, also visit the nearby church complex and archaeological sites. Return to Axum in the afternoon for a short walk through town or a visit to shops selling traditional handicrafts. Overnight: Axum.
Day 3
St. Mary of Zion – Royal Tombs – Fly to Addis Ababa
After breakfast, visit the Church of St. Mary of Zion, one of Ethiopia’s most important Orthodox Christian pilgrimage sites, and learn about the traditions surrounding the Ark of the Covenant, which Ethiopian Orthodox tradition holds is kept in a guarded chapel within the church complex; access to individual buildings is subject to church regulations. Continue to the Tombs of King Kaleb and King Gebre Meskel and discover the role of these rulers in the kingdom’s political and religious history. If time permits, browse the local markets for Tigrayan handicrafts, crosses and woven textiles before your transfer to Axum Airport for your flight back to Addis Ababa.

Rated 5.0 on Tripadvisor and Google, and 4.9 on SafariBookings.
“My tour operator was very communicative even before the trip began and very responsive on WhatsApp. He booked all my domestic flights and arranged all my airport pick-ups and drop-offs. He had professional guides in all the regions I visited, the itinerary was clear, and he was flexible with any changes. There were no extra costs. He is reliable, communicative and well experienced. I will be back with the same company.”

They were patient, professional, knowledgeable and took great care of us. Everything was seamlessly coordinated and they were always on time for pickups and made sure we were briefed in advance of the itinerary and any changes. One of my top travel destinations in Africa, with some of the kindest and warmest people. Maereg went above and beyond! First-class service, always with a smile!”
