Why We Go
An island monastery, hot springs and green hills inside an extinct volcano.
Wenchi is one of the most beautiful landscapes in central Ethiopia. Farmland, forest and waterfalls ring the crater, and a community-run eco-tourism association provides guides, horses and boats.
A typical visit includes the walk or ride down to the lake, a boat crossing to the small island monastery, and time at the hot springs before lunch with a view. It is one of our favourite day trips from the capital.
Highlights
- Hiking or horse riding down to the lake shore
- Boat trip to the island monastery of Cherkos
- Hot springs and waterfalls in the valley
- Community-run eco-tourism with local guides
