The best time to visit Ethiopia: a complete seasonal guide
Ethiopia is a year-round destination, but the right month depends on where you are going and what you want to see. Here is how the seasons work.

UNESCO Intangible Heritage · Festivals & Events
Celebrated on 19 January (20 January in leap years), Timkat commemorates the baptism of Christ in the Jordan and was inscribed by UNESCO in 2019.
Why We Go
On the eve of Timkat, every church’s Tabot, a sacred replica of the Ark of the Covenant, is wrapped in rich cloth and carried in procession to a pool or river, accompanied by priests in ceremonial robes, deacons, choirs and thousands of worshippers. Prayers and hymns continue through the night.
At dawn the water is blessed and sprinkled over the crowds as a renewal of baptismal vows; in Gondar, worshippers leap into Fasilides’ Bath. Later, the Tabots are escorted back to their churches with singing, dancing and celebration. Gondar, Lalibela and Addis Ababa are the most memorable places to experience it.
