Why We Go
Nilotic pastoralists of the west bank, famous for their heavy bead collars.
The Nyangatom are semi-pastoralists who move with their cattle, goats and sheep in search of grazing, while growing crops when conditions allow. Livestock represent wealth, status and security.
Women wear spectacular bead necklaces, sometimes weighing several kilograms. Visiting them requires a longer excursion and is ideal for photographers and travellers seeking remote cultural encounters.
Highlights
- Women’s layered collars of coloured beads
- Semi-nomadic cattle camps
- Ceremonial songs and dances
- Remote villages on the west bank of the Omo
